BUTTERelixir’s much lauded face oil is suitable for all skin types
If there’s one word that epitomises BUTTERelixir, it’s scrumptious. In rich, yellow hues, the brand’s sweet-smelling formulations are luxurious, sensorial and sumptuously made. Not to mention beloved by those who know what good, clean beauty blends should be about.
The label’s first melt-worthy product was a body and hair oil made of just four therapeutic-grade ingredients: almond oil, argan oil, lavender and chamomile. Full of antioxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamins A and E, the multi-tasking oil earned cult status. The next creation was a face-friendly concoction that featured four more superstar oils — apricot, rosehip, argan and Rose essential — that exemplified the brand name by conferring butter smooth, glowing skin.
Today, BUTTERelixir is one of the brands constantly at the top of conscious beauty’s must-have lists. All products are absent of GMOs, preservatives, parabens, sulphates, phthalates or synthetic fragrances. They are also non-toxic, vegan and cruelty-free.
Guided by the belief that “nature is potent”, co-founder Lorenza Pintar and her team strive to create fuss-free products that are conscious of skin, self and surroundings. As a result, reaching for each lotion or oil each and every time promises to make you feel good about what you’re applying, where the ingredients come from and how the formulations deliver real improvement of your skin.
Organic virgin unrefined shea butter, walnut oil and pure mango butter are just some of the ingredients in the deliciously textured supreme lotion
BUTTERelixir’s products look good enough to eat! And we love that the products are unisex and multi-purpose. How did you decide on this brand strategy?
I didn’t have a strategy. I just created something that I needed for myself. With a history of melanoma, I became more aware of what I was feeding my skin. BUTTERelixir was born from — and grows organically with — my personal history and values. Knowing who you are and what you stand for is the ultimate creative process.
“With a history of melanoma, I became more aware of what I was feeding my skin.”
How did you start using Ayurvedic ingredients?
Ayurveda is an exotic word to describe a balanced lifestyle and diet tuned with nature, our own nature and constitution. In this sense, my mother was my very first teacher. However, my interest for this amazing science developed and took a more serious turn after my trips to the south of India and from my yoga studies.
The Bhakti body and hair oil takes three months to make because of the layering process as “virgin organic sesame oil, Jasmine, sandalwood and myrrh are combined slowly over the course of a month, and then aged for two months [to allow] the extracts to bind together.” What difference does this make?
In Sanskrit, bhakti means “devotion to oneself or something higher”
Everyone has a formula they honestly believe in. I just feel confident that mine is better for me. By experience, I feel that the aromatic, woodsy, sweet and floral melange is fully blown within three months. This means to get the melange to deliver its best scent in that time.
We love that the glass bottles you use are Food Grade Safety rated. Why is this important to you?
It is very important. A food grade container is one that will not transfer noxious or toxic substances into the food it is holding. The oil will stay fresher, cleaner and will not lose aromatic intensity. And it can be recycled.
Our plastic packaging is also recyclable and BPA-free. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are hygienic, strong, resistant to attack by microorganisms, unreactive and will not biologically degrade.
Tell us about the Indian Chai tea ingredient you use in your lip balm formula.
I love Chai! It’s my afternoon treat. My chai is very traditional: ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, anise and honey.
You credit your “daily Ashtanga practice for a clarity of vision that inspires the direction of BUTTERelixir.” Can you tell us more?
Ashtanga is a method based on practicing a sequential order of asanas, maintaining correct postures, gazing and breathing. The discipline and devotion inherent to this method keeps me grounded and focused on what needs to be done in the moment, one breath at a time.

The unisex brand offers clean, straightforward and fuss-free beauty options
In your opinion, how exactly do natural and wholesome beauty products work to help calm and centre?
Generally speaking, through my personal experience, the body responds with greater acceptance to nature. Therefore, the effect is potent. This is just my opinion. Again, I am not a healer.
What does conscious living mean to you?
To me, it means to pay attention and understand that people and nature are not for us to abuse. It means that we are in this together and we should treat each other with respect and honesty. It’s just more organic, more interesting.
