We love ourselves a good ol’ fashioned family-run company. Based in upstate New York, Babo Botanicals was created from founder Kate Solomon’s belief that “what goes on children’s bodies should be as natural as what goes into their mouths”. This realisation came to her when she was pregnant with her first child and couldn’t find any products that were safe and natural for her new baby to use.
Today, five kids later, the brand has numerous offerings for hair, scalp and skin for little ones and adults with sensitive skin or skin issues. Its sunscreen products, in particular, are consistently rated #1 on Environmental Working Group and the company continues to hop along — always with families in mind.
Fueled by plant science, products are created in small batches to ensure quality assurance. Most of the organic ingredients used in the formulas are also grown on the family farm while the rest are sourced from local farms and industries.
With the health and safety of families and children as its mission objective — plus the fact that Babo’s collection is 100 per cent gluten-, soy- and dairy-free — we know you wouldn’t want it otherwise.
MADE FOR BABIES AND CHILDREN
Babo Botanicals’ brand strategy was based on my family’s needs. I have sensitive skin, and am hypersensitive to strong fragrances and harsh products, so I was formulating these products for my entire family. I was pregnant with my now 9-year old, and I knew there was an opportunity to introduce a high quality, natural line geared toward people with allergies or sensitive skin.
We source the highest quality ingredients. We source organic ingredients. We support farmers. That’s our mission.
Babo Botanicals’ products contain our proprietary Nutri-Soothe™ Complex, which is made from four organic ingredients that have been saturated in vegetable glycerine (think of tea leaves seeped in hot water for a period of time). These four ingredients — watercress, kudzu, calendula and chamomile — were chosen because they are native to the US and have tremendous medicinal, topical and aromatherapeutic properties. They are packed with anti-inflammatories, vitamins and antioxidants to protect the skin.

THREE FAVOURITE BOTANICALS
Colloidal oatmeal is my favourite. Our products contain a higher percentage than Aveeno’s eczema products, yet we do not put a drug box on our products. Oatmeal helps relieve eczema and dry skin. I also love coconut oil — it is so soothing and moisturising. And of course, non-nano zinc oxide for our sunscreens and diaper cream. Zinc is [a] miracle mineral.
COMMON SKIN ISSUE THAT BABIES AND CHILDREN SUFFER
Eczema. That is why all our baby products contain colloidal oatmeal. It is the most natural and purest form for eczema therapy. Nowadays, so many children suffer from gluten allergies, so avoiding gluten ingredients is also key.
PRODUCTS THAT PARENTS SHOULD ALWAYS PACK
Diaper cream for sure! Our Soothing Diaper Cream packed with 25 per cent non-nano zinc oxide is perfect to protect humid diapers. Also, my favourite Clear Zinc Sunscreen in a lotion or stick form is key to put in any diaper cream. We are also going to launch baby wipes for the face, hands and body — so that will be a must to carry around!
Moderation is my philosophy. My kids love candy and sweets. If I deprived them, they would want it more. When it comes to carbohydrates, I focus on whole grains. We drink a lot of smoothies, eat a lot of fruit and raw vegetables. They seem to like raw vegetables much more than cooked ones. And lots of protein, nuts, eggs or meat. Two things I do not allow in our house — soda and gum.

ON NEW NATURAL AND ORGANIC BRANDS
I love brands in general. Brands to me are like humans – having their own personality – and you either relate to them or not. It’s so great how many new brands have come into the market. It shows real demand from the consumer. It’s a wonderful movement. We all strive to be the healthiest we can while enjoying life and what our natural environment has to offer.
My interpretation is that conscious living is [about] smelling the roses each [and every] day. I had to move out of New York because I couldn’t tell what the weather was each day. I need to feel part of nature. I need to see the changes in seasons, the growing flowers, experience the shift in weather and smell the air. I need to hear birds chirp. I’m a real nature lover. I think best when surrounded by loveliness.
One more point on conscious living is to be conscious of everyone around you. We should be building communities and helping our neighbours. Every person deserves happiness, equality and love.
THE FUTURE OF BABO BOTANICALS
We have a lot in the hopper. As my kids grow, our products are growing up with them. I develop products that my family needs. My 9-year old is now in a new stage of needs (as am I), so we have a lot we’ll be rolling out in 2017. Stay tuned!
