If you want to make a conscious effort to lessen the amount of potentially toxic chemicals that make up your daily skincare routine, switching out your body moisturiser or deodorant are good places to start — seeing as our skin is the body’s largest organ.
In the deodorant department, many have turned to home-made formulas, or all-natural versions bought off-the-shelves amidst growing concerns about the negative side effects of active ingredients like aluminium, alcohols, parabens and phthalates. However, the downside to this could be instances of staining (usually from heavy coconut oil content), or allergic reactions to high amounts of baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate) found in these formulations. These appear as redness, rashes, or drier skin, due to unbalanced skin pH levels.
While one helpful option would be to look for all-natural deodorants with a lower concentration of baking soda in their formulations (especially true for home-made formulas which call for excessive levels of it in their recipe), there are brands that have replaced this ingredient to cater to those with higher skin sensitivity.
Arrowroot powder (also known as arrowroot starch) — a white, powdery substance closely resembling corn starch — is derived from a tropical South American plant and often used as a baking soda replacement in deodorants for people with sensitive skin. It helps to thicken the formula, as well as greatly reduce the chance of allergic reactions.
Meow Meow Tweet makes their deodorants without baking soda and clay. Instead, they utilise dietary magnesium and arrowroot powder to keep odour and moisture under control. Nourishing plant oils and butters also help soothe and condition the skin, while potent essential oils help you stay fresh and smell good. What’s more, their formula is suitable for use on pregnant or nursing women.
